Kirsten Zulyevic
Founder / Senior Lead Instructor
Kirsten started training in martial arts in 1991 in taekwondo and while in the process of competing for the Olympic Team Trials in 2000 she began training in the Israeli self-defense system of Krav Maga. At the time this was only the second instructor certification course for Krav Maga Worldwide, making her the only female instructor in the Pacific NW, including Canada and Alaska. Having found what she was looking for with the "nuts and bolts" approach to self-defense that Krav Maga provided, Kirsten left her traditional martial arts behind and focused on Krav Maga.
In 2000 she became a police officer and found herself training in firearms, defensive tactics and other law enforcement classes where she was the only woman.
"Here I was a 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo, a certified Krav Maga instructor... and I was standing on the firing line with SWAT guys. It was an intimidating experience even for me. It made me think a lot about training from a woman's perspective; what we need, what we want, and how we learn."
In addition to her numerous training accomplishments in service to her community (listed below), she is a certified Civilian and Law Enforcement Krav Maga Instructor. In 2002 Krav Maga Worldwide Force Training Division Senior Instructor and division head Londale Theuss made her a Lead Instructor for the Krav Maga Worldwide Force Training Division. Kirsten has assisted Jon Pascal (current Head of the Force Training Division) with Krav Maga instructor certification courses for law enforcement. Taught Krav Maga to numerous agencies from; Oregon, Maryland, Washington DC, Idaho, Pennsylvania, and Washington for instructor certification courses. This training was given to parole and probation, patrol, corrections, campus police, and security services. Kirsten continues to provide Krav Maga training in dynamic situations and is on contract to teach all levels of defensive tactics training to local law enforcement. She has been assigned as head of agency firearms programs, defensive tactics program, and agency training.
Kirsten is the only female instructor to be certified by UFC champion Bas Rutten. Through this relationship she would later go on to created his striking program curriculum, run the instructor development program, and head the licensing division for Bas Rutten Systems. Currently she is a mama bear to new twins and teaching at the academy. Her training center, Krav Maga Oregon has been in operation since 1999 and is currently only offering seminars as her schedule allows.
